Tony and Austin Ferrari, natives who now live in San Francisco, have been working for the better part of a year to make that idea -- both new to the area and a little obscure, they say -- a reality.

The business would be the first of its kind in the region.

More than 50 years ago, Fausto Ferrari staked his claim in the American dream when he opened the Fausto Ferrari Barbershop on Garfield Place downtown. Now his grand-nephews, Tony and Austin Ferrari, are writing a new chapter in that story as their own family brand — The Ferrari Bros. — introduces the new coffee shop and wine bar Mom ‘N ‘Em to Camp Washington.

It may not be the coffee-shop-in-an-Airstream-trailer concept Tony and Austin Ferrari initially dreamed about, but Mom 'N'em will still serve as a neighborhood space when it opens March 29 in Camp Washington. It'll just be a neighborhood space that happens to serve up booze.

Not only does Mom 'n 'em serve an assortment of craft coffee, tea and housemade sodas, they also offer a menu of sweets, toasties and plenty of tinned fish, plus a curated wine selection and cocktails like a gin and tonic and negroni.

The history of Cincinnati can be told through its aging homes and buildings – all of which are still filled with life, whether or not they have been maintained over the years. The Queen City and its residents are passionate about giving new purposes to these historic places, and you’ll often see an aging warehouse transformed into apartments or a run-down business restored as a thriving restaurant. Two locals that definitely believe in this vision are the Ferrari brothers, who have already put their stamp on historic properties in our city. Their newest venture, Mom ‘n ’em Coffee, is now open in Camp Washington, and you’re going to love this 127-year-old house turned cafe in Cincinnati where you can fuel up on coffee and wine.

Perhaps more than any other business, the coffee shop is the purview of the freelance journalist, and as such, I have frequented many in our fair city. I believe I have enough data compiled to say that Mom ‘n ‘em Coffee in Camp Washington, created by brothers Tony and Austin Ferrari, is not only a true rarity, but something truly special.

Tony & Austin Ferrari wanted to do something special for their mom, Theresa Ferrari, so they refurbished a house at the corner of Colerain and Bates Avenues in Camp Washington and turned it into a coffee shop as a gift to her. Besides coffees and teas, the West Coast-inspired spot serves pastries, breakfast items, tinned fishes, and a variety of wines and alcoholic beverages.

I first met Austin Ferrari, 26, and his brother Tony, 32, out in San Francisco, where they were both living at the time, running the diminutive but essentially perfect Provender Coffee, just one of many reasons to make the trip up Potrero Hill. During our first meeting, on a sunny and warm February day, we mostly talked about Cincinnati, and their plans to go back and invest in their hometown, which lately had been on the upswing. This wasn’t even two years ago; at this writing, they have opened three businesses in the city, complimenting the two they still own, and co-own, in San Francisco.

The shop has gained quite a bit of attention from local coffee fanatics, foodies and wine aficionados since opening in the spring of 2019. Now, the coffee and wine café is being recognized under the national spotlight via a recent article from Food & Wine magazine, where writer David Landsel goes behind the scenes and spends a day in the life of a barista.

Like so many other former San Franciscans, Tony and Austin Ferrari had only one problem with their adopted city, in which they had invested so much of themselves—would they ever be able to seriously put down roots? Brothers Austin and Tony Ferrari created the perfect “third place” when they opened Mom ’N ’Em Coffee in Camp Washington this spring. It’s in a completely renovated historic house that offers a physical space away from work (though, to be fair, it’s a great place to get stuff done) but not quite the social isolation of home.

Dedicated to mom — with a little name inspiration from the radio station 700 WLW — Mom ‘n’ Em Coffee serves up coffee and wine with a homey feel. Located on the corner of Colerain and Bates in Camp Washington, this spot will get you going with pastries, breakfast treats and that always needed cup o’ joe.

Mom ‘n ‘em is a passion project several years in the making for the Ferrari brothers, Tony and Austin, and a tribute to their mom, Theresa. Located in a former 1890s home, Mom ‘n ‘em acts as a third place, with a diverse offering of wines and coffee, cheeses, cured meats, pastries from North South Baking, breakfast sandwiches and toasties. The anchovy toastie comes on thick slices of local Allez country loaf, generously swiped with homemade salsa verde, atop which rest silver strips of previously tinned anchovies, drizzled with extra virgin olive oil and doused with a sprinkling of chili.

When Tony Ferrari spotted the large, vacant house on Colerain Ave., he knew it was the right one.

A Cincinnatian by birth, he was living in SF at the time but was planning a move back home with his brother, Austin, to start some business ventures in their hometown.

Tony & Austin Ferrari moved home from San Francisco with a mission: to build something from their hearts with family and friends that serves their communities. That’s exactly what they’ve done with Camp Washington’s Mom ‘N ‘Em Coffee & Wine and Downtown Cincinnati’s Fausto. By using their shared experiences and inspiration they gained through their time in California, where they owned Provender Coffee & Hillside Supper Club, they have really dialed in their vision and created spaces that feel like home.
